GOVERNOR'S MANSION

MOHANDIRAM WALAUWE

224 Wakwela Road, Galle, Sri Lanka

Grand Old House built in 1920 during the British Colonial days.  It housed the first Lankan Governor and Tax Collector of the Southern Province of Ceylon.  He was known as the Mohandiram and the grand mansion is known as an antique, purely Sri Lankan style Walauwa, as noted by all the fancy gingerbread eaves.  He and his wife and 13 children lived in the home, and we obtained the house from the last son living on the property.  The governor's coronation was performed on the front steps with more than a thousand well wishers in the front garden.  The house is wonderful, full of lovely hand carved antiques of ebony and teak, four fresh water wells, a separate staff and kitchen building, long circular driveway, a central grand balustrade stairway leading up to the house, and nearly 10,000 square feet of living space under the roof.  Have a peek!
